What is otoacoustic emissions test?

It is a hearing screening tool for infants from 0 months to 3 years of age. It is usually performed for new born babies to detect deafness. Otoacoustic emissions is a very soft sounds which is generated in Inner ear (cochlea). OAEs disappear when the inner ear has been damaged. It is used to determine the health of the inner ear.

Why otoacoustic emissions?

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) is done to find out how good your inner ear and cochlea works. It is done to measure the otoacoustic emissions i.e., these are the sounds produced by inner ear in response to the sound.

What are the benefits of OAE?

  • It evaluated outer hair cell function and cochlear status.
  • It does not require a behavioral response and is very effective for newborn hearing test.
  • It also detects conductive hearing loss.
  • It identifies if there is a blockage in your outer or middle ear.
